Zippo lighters were a common item found among many of the U.S. Military forces in Vietnam. These lighters were an essential source of fire that was used in numerous ways. Soldiers used these small and easily transportable lighters for a variety of reasons including, starting fires, lighting cigarettes, and they were even used as light sources. However, one of the most important of these was their use in self-expression. Soldiers engraved a variety of images and sayings into the sides of these iconic lighters.

Zippo lighters served as a way for Vietnam soldiers to express themselves in a creative or artistic manner. They engraved their units, emblems, and even quotes into the side of their lighters. Some of these sayings were personal mottos and even expressions of their overall attitude toward the Vietnam War.
Not only did soldiers engrave quotes on their lighters, they also engraved images. Note the skull and wings engraved on the cap of the zippo lighter exhibited on the right.
